The Audacity of Living!
During an interview today, yet another Democratic congressman made the argument that requiring individuals to purchase health insurance is no different than requiring them to purchase auto insurance. This analogy has been proven previously to be a poor one, and yet still the Democrats are continuing to use it.
In the interview, the show host was questioning the constitutionality of requiring individuals to purchase any product or service when the congressman made the comparison about auto insurance. That is when another reason why the analogy does not hold water came to mind.
As noted in the previous article linked above, the reason why individuals are required to purchase auto insurance is because they have made the decision to purchase a vehicle. Owning a vehicle and operating it in public is reason enough to require those vehicle owners to obtain at least liability coverage just in case they have an accident that causes damage to others. The auto insurance is part of the price one has to pay for the privilege of owning a vehicle.
With health insurance though, the privilege that individuals are enjoying which would require them to purchase insurance for themselves is simply living. If you live then you have to give. If you survive another day then you will be required to pay. If you are still above ground then your pay is subject to impound.
Just surviving from day to day has suddenly become a taxable offense in the Democrats’ healthcare reform package. In a system where everyone has to pay for health insurance whether they need it or not, where will be the incentives to live healthier lives? The only incentive and only true way to escape being trapped in such a ridiculous healthcare system is, as Alan Grayson (D – FL) might say, to “Die quickly!”
